Scything is a great, zero carbon way to keep fit and mow your grass at any time of the day without disturbing your neighbours. It’s also the easiest way to manage areas you want to leave a bit longer for wildlife. Join us with longtime scyther Jim McVittie for this free taster session and have a go. It doesn’t require great strength - it’s more like Tai Chi than Judo and our scything workgroup has scythers of all ages and abilities. Some scythes are available to try out. BYO water and sturdy gloves. RSVP and questions to hnheco@gmail.com
Haslingfield Quarry (or clunch pit) is one of only two sites recorded by the Wildlife Trust in the three counties of Beds, Northants and Cambs which are home to the rare Man Orchid. This relatively undisturbed chalk grassland, a County Wildlife Site, also boasts Bee Orchids, Twayblades, Common Spotted Orchids and Pyramidal Orchids, as well as many other native wildflowers. This free walk and talk by resident Clive Blower is open to all and includes historical information about the Quarry and nearby cottages and an optional climb to the top of Money Hill, with 360 degree panoramic views across the south of the county and north to the spires of Cambridge. Easy walk to the Quarry from the bottom of Quarry Lane, off Back Lane/School Lane. The walk to the top of Money Hill is moderately steep and can be slippery when wet. Nettles and brambles are common - wear sturdy shoes and long trousers. BYO drinks/sunhats. Meet at 10 am sharp at the bottom of Quarry Lane.

The film Fugolburna, the Anglo Saxon name for Fulbourn, is a call to protect and restore the Fulbourn and Wilbraham springs and iconic chalk streams currently in crisis, largely due to over abstraction from the aquifer. The film also celebrates the Fulbourn Fen Nature Reserve and beyond, and shows the efforts made by local community and environment groups to support nature recovery and improve the health of local ecosystems.

An inspiring and thought provoking small group discussion using the Thrutopian coaching cards. Quoting from the website: “Thrutopians are people who know in their bones that the old stories are dying. They don’t pretend it can be fixed, and they’re not waiting for permission to write the new ones.
They don’t abandon hope—they compost it, along with the myths of endless growth, control, and comfort.” This will be our third session but each session can be experienced as a stand-alone as we look at different cards and have different reactions to them. Places are very limited as this takes place in a members home. Write to Michelle: hnheco@gmail.com to inquire.

Anita Chitaya has a gift; she can help bring abundant food from dead soil, she can make men fight for gender equality, and she can end child hunger in her village. Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge yet: persuading Americans that climate change is real. Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House, she meets climate skeptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US, from the rural-urban divide, to schisms of race, class and gender, to the thinking that allows some Americans to believe they live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to persuade us that we’re all in this together.
Join H&H Eco and Sustainable Shepreth for this film screening and discussion at Haslingfield Village Hall. The film, which encourages us to "Think Globally, Act Locally," brings the impact of climate change in Africa into sharp focus through Anita's first hand experiences. Her courage, sensitivity and belief in the possibility of change are moving and inspiring. As well as climate change the film considers issues of race, class and gender, and provides much food for thought.
After the screening we will have time for a discussion around some of the issues, feelings and ideas the film has raised.
"a heartfelt exploration of the power of stories to make change"
Jeremy Williams, The Earthbound Report
