Haslingfield and Harlton are neighbouring villages in South Cambridgeshire, U.K. We are a group of villagers who are concerned about the global climate and ecological emergencies, and want to do whatever we can in our communities to address them.

Mission

The world is facing an unprecedented environmental challenge due to CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, overconsumption, and the loss and degradation of the natural environment.

These impacts have arisen from industrialisation, especially in the context of a profit and growth driven system, which has become dominant over the past century, and which has historically failed to recognise the functioning ecosystems of the natural world both as essential components of the economy and as our only life support system.

While we recognise that as individuals we can’t exist outside that system, we intend, through self-education, trial and error, leading by example, seeking to engage the whole community without blame or judgement, and fostering communication, to encourage an overall reduction in energy use in our local communities, and a progressive attitude toward protection and repair of the natural environment.

Values

We agree on the following values which will inform our actions and communications.

NON-JUDGEMENTAL

We encourage people to make the changes they are able to, recognising that no-one has perfect eco credentials but that we can all make a difference.

POSITIVE

Whilst we may alert people to some of the harsh environmental realities we face, we also aim to empower people to take action, focussing on what can be done rather than what hasn’t been.

COLLABORATIVE

We take a synergistic approach to our activities and work together, both as a group and externally with others, to achieve our aims and objectives.

RESPONSIBLE

We recognise that regardless of the actions that have led to our current ecological situation, we all have a shared responsibility to help with moving forward, both as a community and on a wider scale.

ACCESSIBLE

We aim to make our activities as accessible as possible to all who want to be part of the solutions to protecting and repairing our natural environment.

Objectives

The objectives of the Haslingfield & Harlton Eco Group are:

  • to advance the climate and ecological agenda locally, engaging as many villagers and groups as possible through communication, events and activities

  • to monitor, record and where possible improve biodiversity in our villages, including our public and private spaces and river

  • to help residents and the Parish Councils improve energy/fuel efficiencies in buildings and transport, reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce waste, by providing research and reporting advice and communication

Scope

We have, so far, identified the following activities as within the scope of our objectives:

  • Organising local community events and projects

  • Engaging and working with other local groups such as the churches, schools, Guides and Scouts, farmers, river groups, campaign groups, conservation groups

  • Working with key stakeholders such as the local Parish Councils and South Cambridgeshire District Council, local farmers, Anglian Water and others

  • Fundraising for particular activities such as events

  • Communications via social media, email, leaflets and posters, website

  • Undertaking ecological surveying, monitoring, reporting

  • Undertaking active conservation work, planting, seeding, mammal tracking and monitoring with involvement and permission from key stakeholders as necessary

  • Encouraging local input and involvement in planning issues and developments that will impact the local environment
