Emergency Briefing Followup - What's Next for us and our Local Groups?

This follow up is for people who have seen the People’s Emergency Briefing film, OR the full briefings which are available here on YouTube, as well as anyone who is aware and informed about the multi-pronged crisis and doesn’t want to take it lying down. We will start from the premise that there are things we can do, share stories of communities which are doing it, share and support each other with our feelings about the crisis, and look toward actions we can take together. • Quarry Lane Cambridge, England, CB23 United Kingdom (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Haslingfield Quarry (or clunch pit) is one of only two sites recorded by the Wildlife Trust in the three counties of Beds, Northants and Cambs which are home to the rare Man Orchid. This relatively undisturbed chalk grassland, a County Wildlife Site, also boasts Bee Orchids, Twayblades, Common Spotted Orchids and Pyramidal Orchids, as well as many other native wildflowers. This free walk and talk by resident Clive Blower is open to all and includes historical information about the Quarry and nearby cottages and an optional climb to the top of Money Hill, with 360 degree panoramic views across the south of the county and north to the spires of Cambridge. Easy walk to the Quarry from the bottom of Quarry Lane, off Back Lane/School Lane. The walk to the top of Money Hill is moderately steep and can be slippery when wet. Nettles and brambles are common - wear sturdy shoes and long trousers. BYO drinks/sunhats. Meet at 10 am sharp at the bottom of Quarry Lane.

It’s also the easiest way to manage areas you want to leave a bit longer for wildlife. Join us with longtime scyther Jim McVittie for this free taster session and have a go. It doesn’t require great strength - it’s more like Tai Chi than Judo and our scything workgroup has scythers of all ages and abilities. Some scythes are available to try out. Fugolburna: stream frequented by birds? Film Screening from the Village Society

The film Fugolburna, the Anglo Saxon name for Fulbourn, is a call to protect and restore the Fulbourn and Wilbraham springs and iconic chalk streams currently in crisis, largely due to over abstraction from the aquifer. The film also celebrates the Fulbourn Fen Nature Reserve and beyond, and shows the efforts made by local community and environment groups to support nature recovery and improve the health of local ecosystems.

Thrutopia Discussion Evening

Thrutopia Discussion Evening

An inspiring and thought provoking small group discussion using the Thrutopian coaching cards. Quoting from the website: “Thrutopians are people who know in their bones that the old stories are dying. They don’t pretend it can be fixed, and they’re not waiting for permission to write the new ones.
They don’t abandon hope—they compost it, along with the myths of endless growth, control, and comfort.” This will be our third session but each session can be experienced as a stand-alone as we look at different cards and have different reactions to them. Places are very limited as this takes place in a members home. Write to Michelle: hnheco@gmail.com to inquire.

The Ants and the Grasshopper - film screening and discussion

A Malawian woman stands in front of a collage of smokestacks, the White House and a farm vehicle.

Book your free tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1577339738619

Anita Chitaya has a gift; she can help bring abundant food from dead soil, she can make men fight for gender equality, and she can end child hunger in her village. Now, to save her home from extreme weather, she faces her greatest challenge yet: persuading Americans that climate change is real. Traveling from Malawi to California to the White House, she meets climate skeptics and despairing farmers. Her journey takes her across all the divisions shaping the US, from the rural-urban divide, to schisms of race, class and gender, to the thinking that allows some Americans to believe they live on a different planet from everyone else. It will take all her skill and experience to persuade us that we’re all in this together.

Join H&H Eco and Sustainable Shepreth for this film screening and discussion at Haslingfield Village Hall. The film, which encourages us to "Think Globally, Act Locally," brings the impact of climate change in Africa into sharp focus through Anita's first hand experiences. Her courage, sensitivity and belief in the possibility of change are moving and inspiring. As well as climate change the film considers issues of race, class and gender, and provides much food for thought.

After the screening we will have time for a discussion around some of the issues, feelings and ideas the film has raised.

"a heartfelt exploration of the power of stories to make change"

Jeremy Williams, The Earthbound Report

This screening made possible through the support of Aid Alliance, which brings people and organisations together to defend the 0.7% aid spending commitment in the 2015 International Development Act, as well as raise awareness and change public perceptions on aid and development.

Tickets are free, however we will be grateful for donations via cash or QR code on the door to cover our costs. Any additional funds raised will go toward the work of Sustainable Shepreth and the Haslingfield and Harlton Eco Group.
